Infant survives truck accident, aunt’s legs crushed
law-court

A 48-year-old driver, Richard Fayemi, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos, sitting at the Samuel Olori Court House, Ogba, Agege, for allegedly crushing the two legs of one Mercy Ihiere (45) with a trailer at Moshalashi, Alhaja, Agege, Lagos. According to the charges prepared against the accused by the police,
Richard, driving a trailer with registration number, KSF 233XB, drove in a dangerous and reckless manner and climbed the two legs of his victim, causing her serious injuries that led to the amputation of her two legs; an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 23 of RTA Vol 6 Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2003. The incident allegedly occurred after a downpour in the area. It was gathered that it was still drizzling when people heard the sound of some breaking planks; this caused commotion as the breaking planks were used to make the long wooden culvert on which many were standing. The prosecution alleged that the culvert caved in causing most of those standing upon it to fall  into the deep gutter where they sustained various degrees of injury. Mercy, who had her sister’s baby strapped to her back, was trying to buy some fish from the roadside traders. She was apparently not lucky enough to fall into the gutter, rather she fell on the road where her two legs were immediately climbed by the rear tyre of a trailer fully loaded with cement. Although the baby on Mercy’s back was not injured, her too legs were crushed beyond recognition. She was immediately rushed to hospital where it became imperative to amputate her two legs. Following the suspect’s plea of ‘not guilty’ before the court, his counsel, CJ Mark, applied for his bail. Prosecutor Mike Unah did not contest the bail but advised the court to use its discretion, particularly with regards to the second count charge which bordered on the amputation of the woman’s two legs. The suspect was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum. The matter was adjourned to January 16, 2017.
